Why So Important

Ecological Sustainability
Nam Sang Wai, a place with high ecological value of the wetlands, including a recently established roost of 2-3,000 Great Cormorants – a species of regional conservation importance, and the changes in community aspirations.

  • Lively Riverside Habitat
  • This habitat supports a surprisingly diverse ecological system. On the exposed river bed, you will find the mudskipper Boleophthalmus pectinirostris. Largely mud-coloured, this species has subtle light blue spots. Often seen bouncing agilely, they look quite comical when they pump up their gills with water. On the river bank you may find the elegant egrets. Disturbed by your presence, these birds might just take flight.

  • Hong Kong's Last River Sampan
  • Though the river sampan is short, it serve as our precious memories that reveal our history, our previous living style -- a simple transportation as it only relies on human power and effort.

  • Birds' Habitat
During late autumn to early spring, Nam Shang Wai serves as a place of birds' habitat. Numerous wintering or migrating birds gather in large groups to feed on the river banks, especially the meeting point of Kam Tin River and Shan Pui River. Most species of gulls are largely white with grey upperparts and back. It is an amazing scene when the water birds feed and swim in graceful postures
