HOI HA WAN

Secret Of HONG KONG : Hoi Ha Wan

图片Coastal environment of Hoi Ha
Hoi Ha Wan, also known as Jone’s Cove, is a bay located in the north of the Sai Kung Peninsula. It is one of the first batch marine parks established by the Hong Kong government and it is the only marine park which can be reached by road transport. In every weekends and holidays, hundreds of people would choose to visit Hoi Ha Wan to spend their leisure time. Visitors could enjoy a large variety of activities in Hoi Ha Wan which included hiking, swimming, diving and rolling.

In addition to its beautiful scenery, Hoi Ha Wan is also famous of its wonderful water quality and significant biodiversity. As Hoi Ha Wan is a sheltered bay with well water quality, it is just like a heaven for housing a great variety of marine lives. These unique features have make Hoi Ha Wan become a habitats with high conservation value.

As Hoi Ha is easy to access, authorities have been carefully monitoring the number of visitors and many other protection measures have been carry out in order to protect the ecosystem from human intervention. Moreover, since 2003, the Jockey Club HSBC WWF Hong Kong Hoi Ha Marine Life center has become a center of education and promotion of marine biodiversity conservation.

The “heaven of ecosystem” is now facing a number of unprecedented threats. Although there are laws to protect the bay from human intervention, it seems that it is not enough to deter all illegal activities, including the stealing of coral and illegal sightseeing boats. Recently, extensive death of marine life happened in Hoi Ha Wan. Many conservationists claim that the marine environment in Hoi Ha is being contaminated  and the AFCD should review their environmental protection policies of Hoi Ha Wan in order to prevent the issue from becoming more serious.

Since 2010 Tai Long Sai Wan incident, the government promised not to include land within the protection of country parks for village housing. However, the government’s recently launched planning map of Hoi Ha Wan still included substantial land for the construction of village house.
