What is Lamma Winds?
Lamma Winds was constructed by Hong Kong Electric for supplying electricity to local businesses and residents in a renewable way. It is the first commercial scale wind power station in Hong Kong. It occupies a land area of 2,500 square metres at the hilltop of Tai Ling and standing 71m tall. Since 2001, the wind monitoring study started, and began operation in 2006 thus created an important new chapter in the history of local electricity generation.
By piloting this wind power project, Hong Kong Electric hopes it would provide invaluable practical experience in operating wind turbine and also provide the public better understanding of renewable energy. It also help to explore wind power as potential supplement of fossil fuel in Hong Kong.
Besides, as this is the first wind power station, it helps to gain local knowledge and experience in planning, designing and maintenance of wind turbines in order to possibly widen the scale of development in Hong Kong. by replacing the coals and fossil fuels genertion, for every 1,200 units of wind power produced, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by about one tonne. There is also an exhibition center in the site, it provides detail information abour the wind turbine and the benefits and limitations of the nature of wind and other sources of renewable energy with examples of their applications worldwide. The Lamma Winds not only provide more energy for Hong Kong in a green way, it also helps to educate people for the importance of green energy in order to raise the sustainability. It is also a new landmark in Lamma Island.
