Nan lian garden, diamond Hill |
|
Nan Lian Garden, a serenity in bustling hustling Hong Kong. Where Hong Kong has a great number of public parks, Nan Lian lies a bit out of the way for the ordinary tourist. In the north east of Kowloon near MTR stop Diamond Hill you can find this 3.5 hectare park, lying between highways and numerous residence towers.
The park has been built in the style of the Tang dynasty, a period around the 19th century where gardening and landscaping took a huge flight in upperclass China. Water, rocks and greenery make this a tranquil place. In the old days the purpose of these gardens was to give inspiration to writers and philosophers, which I can image. The Nan Lian Garden was only 'recently' opened in 2006, and the purpose is mainly show how landscaping was done in the past and serve as a visiting site for both locals and tourists.
I was greatly surprised by the local teahouse, which also serves as a waterfall. A great combination of form and function as you can see on the picture below. The garden is daily maintained by the Chi Lun Nunnery which lies next to the garden. For foodie lovers the Chi Lin vegetarian restaurant is a true heaven, do try the truffles pasta!

The park can be quite a maze when you wander through it. For your convenience I have added a map, although it's directions are in Chinese. If you need a break from the hectic city life, but don't want to spend much time travelling, the Nan Lian Garden is a great choice, mainly due to it's convenient location. It is also a great location to make photographs, as is why I went there. I only came across it because a fellow exchange student told me about the garden.
